This is actually from a video on clothing characters, but it's a tangent. Pretty common for me to go off on them. I do find they're also the best way to come up with new ideas, so it's a balancing act. Sometimes I'll "waste" a whole day working on a tangent, and feel disappointed. Kind of "Oh no, why did I spend 4 hours working on an idea that isn't even relevant to this project" - only to revisit it a year later and use it for something else and be happy with it.

Perhaps everything you think about and learn gets used in some way, even if you aren't aware of it. I like to think so! And not just because it makes me feel less guilty about my tangents ;)
