Been waiting for this movie for the longest time, even before they announced the movie. I just knew this concept, this story, was too big not to become a movie someday.

Fast forward to the present day, I’ve now seen the tapes… kinda.

Being familiar with what the Backrooms are, and the many stories people have created around them, everyone always had a different take. I feel like that’s exactly what this movie did.

After the first watch, my brain analysed it as a casual moviegoer. The first and second acts were phenomenal in suspense, character building, and that chilling score. All of it kept me gripped, wondering what was going to happen next.

This is where it gets a bit odd for the casual viewer though.

The third act starts and it feels like everything changes, from the main protagonist to the main focus of the story. That’s completely fine to do, but only when there’s some sort of explanation, or at least a little time to understand the jump that just happened.

When I said “kinda” about the tapes above, them not being missing in this movie would’ve actually helped bridge that gap. To the casual watcher, the movie does fall apart a little in its third act.

And that’s why this movie is so polarising to me.

Because for the people who know and love the lore of the Backrooms, this movie had me thinking about the things not said, not shown, not explained. The hindsight, the parallels, like the shrink conversation and the dinner conversation. Whose mind is this? Whose perspective are we navigating? Were things intentionally left out for us to find ourselves in our own Backrooms within our minds?

My brain sees these Backrooms as the world’s memory cache, fragmented ruins of us and the things around us, corrupted as our memories keep stacking onto themselves.
And that’s the beauty of this movie.

Everyone is going to walk away with their own version of what they saw.

And for that, I truly enjoyed this movie, because it’s going to have me thinking about it for the next few days with questions.
