Let’s build a strong national movement to defend higher education. We have a lot of work ahead of us.
The American Association of University Professors
Adelphi University Chapter seeks a Union Organizing & Contract Enforcement Intern (Part Time) to be based in Garden City, NY. Details can be found at: https://t.co/Q2sGsT7ooP #1u#UnionStrong@aaupadelphi@AAUP
ACLU has filed a motion for preliminary injunction on behalf of the plaintiffs, asking the Court to block Texas A&M's censorship policy until a final judgment is made. The Motion includes detailed allegations of how the censorship policy has been enforced throughout the A&M campuses.

Today I testified before the Texas A&M Board of Regents in opposition to Agenda Item 4.1, which seeks to remove courses addressing race, gender, multiculturalism, and contemporary social issues from the core curriculum:
My name is Dr. Leonard Bright, professor at Texas A&M University. Today, I speak as a Texas citizen and President of the American Association of University Professors–Texas A&M College Station Chapter.
I rise in strong opposition to Agenda Item 4.1.
This proposal prepares students for a world we have left behind—and advances a political agenda unrelated to our educational mission.
It implies that understanding race, gender, sexuality, multiculturalism, and contemporary society is somehow less fundamental to education.
In what world is that the case?
A world in which our institutions emphasized whiteness, male-domination, and Western-centered? A world in which racial discrimination was written into law, women were denied equal opportunities, and people were persecuted because of their sexuality?
That world existed. And America has spent generations confronting that legacy and struggling to fulfill its promises of liberty, equality, freedom of speech, and freedom of thought in our continuing effort to form a more perfect Union.
North America has never been culturally monolithic. Long before the United States existed (and where you sit right now), hundreds of distinct Indigenous nations inhabited this continent. The nation that followed was shaped by Indigenous peoples, European immigrants, enslaved Africans and their descendants, and successive generations of immigrants from around the world.
That diversity is not peripheral to the American story. It is a fundamental part of the American story.
It shaped our economy and workforce. It shaped our culture, arts, sciences, and institutions. Civil-rights movements led by Americans historically excluded from power forced this nation to more fully honor its constitutional promises. And America's ability to attract talent from around the world has contributed enormously to our leadership in science, technology, medicine, economic innovation, and national security.
So I ask: What could possibly be more fundamental than teaching students about Texas as it is, America as it is, and the world as it is—and preparing them for what all three are becoming?
Yet Texas A&M now appears intent on reshaping our classrooms, programs, and degrees to manufacture a preferred political worldview.
That is political interference in education.
Texas A&M should no more produce conservative students than liberal students.
Our job is not to manufacture a political worldview.
History will judge whether, when confronted with political pressure, this institution had the courage to remain a university—a public good that serves all citizens of this state.
Reject Agenda Item 4.1.

Imagine your bank changes the terms of a loan you've been paying down for a decade—it is increases your payment + extends the term by 5yrs.
Any commercial bank would be accused of violating basic contract law.
So what happens when the Dept of Ed does it?

Great questions about the new core curriculum from UT students. If only there had been an open forum where students and faculty could ask these questions and offer insights before the plan was presented to the Regents… https://t.co/4Nc8XYuuUc

“Academic workers did not create this crisis. But we intend to fix it by building a system of higher education worthy of this country—affordable & accessible to every qualified student, governed once again by those who teach & learn within it.”

"...300 courses were “proactively” modified by faculty members before review." So much obeying in advance. Solidarity, @AAUP ✊️ They will lose in court. Outrageous.
@ADL@Penn It also erases the many Jewish faculty, students, & staff who share those criticisms. In this sense, the report echoes the Trump admin’s weaponization of antisemitism as a pretext for attacking colleges & universities w/reckless disregard for the people who study & work in them.
@ADL@Penn Our Statement on Boycotts did not endorse any boycott. It rejected the categorical claim that every institutional boycott, regardless of its purpose or context, violates academic freedom. It protects the right of faculty & students to debate such calls & decide for themselves.
@ADL@Penn It is equally troubling to cite our scholasticide webinar as evidence of indifference toward Jewish faculty and students. That argument collapses criticism of the actions of a nation-state—and the destruction of Palestinian universities in Gaza—into antisemitism.
@ADL@Penn …while expressly rejecting the targeting of individual scholars.
Calling that a “clear violation of academic freedom” is ironic: ADL & AEN are effectively demanding that the AAUP restrict our members’ academic freedom to enforce their preferred political position. 🤔
