Canada wary of 'fast-starting' Bafana as Broos names XI for World Cup knockout clash

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has admitted he expects Bafana Bafana to come out firing when the two nations meet in their historic FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash on Sunday night.

Both teams have reached the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their history, with South Africa qualifying after finishing second in Group A, while co-hosts Canada secured second place in Group B.

Although Canada head into the match as favourites, Marsch insists his side will have to be at their very best to overcome Hugo Broos' in-form men.

"We're expecting South Africa to be very intense, to have a fast start and to be excited in spirit for this match," Marsch told reporters.

"It's a big moment for their federation and their team.

"Broos has done a very good job preparing them and getting them to be at their best, especially after the first match where they got those two red cards against Mexico.

"They stayed strong in the tournament and found a way to improve as it has gone on.

"We know exactly what qualities they have and what to expect. It's also a moment where we want to be at our best."

Marsch also welcomed the return of star full-back Alphonso Davies, saying his availability provides a major boost.

"We've spoken a lot about getting stronger physically as the tournament progresses. Now that we've got Alphonso back, it's a big moment and a big boost for the team."

Broos names Bafana starting XI

Meanwhile, Hugo Broos has confirmed the starting line-up that will take on Canada at SoFi Stadium.

Bafana will once again rely on the side that defeated South Korea 1-0 to secure their place in the knockout rounds for the first time in South African football history.
