In High School baseball "Pitch Design" and "Pitch "Metrics is hard to navigate. Its cool to know the numbers but dangerous to obsess over them.
Some thoughts of mine (coming from a person that really loves this stuff)
1. Movement profile and spin rate really only matter once you have a consistent base of data to pull from. If you can spin a breaking ball one time at 2700 who cares? The median outweighs the outlier. For high school pitchers you will see huge fluctuation week to week in how they sleep, recover, etc and the numbers will show that. Its more important to teach them consistency rather than chasing those outlier metrics. In the off season they are growing, training, making dramatic changes to their delivery
2. Spin Efficiency is the most valuable metric for high school and youth. It really highlights 2 things.
- What arsenal should they work with? Supinator vs Pronator. Grips they could use etc.
- Do they have the ability to stay behind and through the baseball.
* Take note of their unique traits but its too early especially if they dont throw hard enough to really dive into leveraging them. Teach them to throw a true fastball.
3. Nothing really matters until you get to a certain velocity command balance. Why? Because when you start throwing harder everything will change anyways and you start from square 1.
Until you are consistent with your command 60-65% k's <3 BB/9 and can consistently throw 85+MPH you really shouldnt spend any time on pitch design becuase it really just doesnt matter. Just spend it on those 2 things. By far your biggest ROI. Those numbers are cool to know but your are wasting valuable developmental time.
