Bees are ectotherms, meaning they can't warm up their bodies on their own. But some bumble bees can function like an endotherm. These bees can "detach" their wing muscles from their wings and move them so quickly that they can warm up their bodies.

Social bees have "haplodiploidy" where males have only one set of chromosomes (haploid) and females have two (diploid). That means that when a haploid male mates with a diploid female, the female gives birth to diploid daughters. Later, those daughters will produce haploid males.
This Saturday is a great time to photograph some bees to submit to our photo contest! See our website for contest rules and how to submit photos. Tomorrow is the last day of the contest! #pollinatorweek#bees

Bees can't see the colour red because they don't have a photoreceptor for it, like humans do. Red appears as black as it goes farther from yellow to orange to red. Instead of red, bees see more into the violet range than humans. #pollinatorweek#bees
