I have an exciting announcement to make.

It’s one of the greatest honours of my life to represent the people of Lesser Slave Lake. You have placed your trust in me to be your voice, and that responsibility matters deeply to me.

Over the past year, I’ve taken some time to reflect on certain moments and on how I chose to raise concerns publicly, particularly when it came to colleagues and teammates in government.

While holding government to account is an important part of our Westminster system, I wasn’t elected to serve as a member of the opposition. I was elected as a member of the United Conservative Party, a team I was proud to be part of and one that the people of Lesser Slave Lake put their trust in. 

Looking back, there were times I let passion and emotion lead my decisions. My public criticism of the Premier and the government, particularly around the budget, came from passion for our riding, but I recognize now there was a better way to handle those disagreements.

I’ve always stood up for my constituents, and that’ll never change. But I’ve learned that how I raise concerns matters and that I’m best able to serve the people I represent when I work as part of a strong team.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to move forward, and I’m glad to be welcomed back in the United Conservative Caucus, where I belong, working alongside colleagues to deliver for the great people of Lesser Slave Lake and for all Albertans.

This is an exciting day for our riding and I’m ready to get back to work in Government.

I had a constructive discussion with my fellow Premiers on how best to deal with the threat of tariffs from the incoming U.S. administration. We agreed on several strategies and I look forward to continuing to work with them on this critical issue.

However, federal government officials continue to publicly and privately float the idea of cutting off energy supply to the U.S. and imposing export tariffs on Alberta energy and other products to the United States. Until these threats cease, Alberta will not be able to fully support the federal government’s plan in dealing with the threatened tariffs.

Alberta will simply not agree to export tariffs on our energy or other products, nor do we support a ban on exports of these same products. We will take whatever actions are needed to protect the livelihoods of Albertans from such destructive federal policies.

We  also urge our entire nation to use this tariff threat as an opportunity to correct the misguided direction of this country and commence multiple infrastructure projects that focus on developing, upgrading and exporting our oil, gas and other natural resources, instead of effectively land locking them and keeping us fully reliant on one primary customer.

I will be travelling to Washington D.C. this week for the inauguration, and will be returning to the United States several times over the coming months to meet with U.S. lawmakers and officials to continue to make the case against the imposition of tariffs on Canadian products and to strengthen and grow the trading relationship between our two great and independent nations.

My response to Calgary Council’s position on the Green Line:

“The province’s contribution to the Green Line has never been a blank cheque, and the current alignment put forward by the City is an irresponsible waste of taxpayer dollars. The province promised funding for a line servicing hundreds of thousands of Calgarians in southeast Calgary, not a stub line barely reaching out of downtown.

“It is unfortunate that some members of Council would rather see the Green Line canceled entirely rather than finding a far more cost-effective and longer above-ground alignment that will actually reach hundreds of thousands of Calgarians in the southeast of the city.

“Regarding wind-down costs, I don’t see why Alberta taxpayers should be asked to pay for decade-long mismanagement and decisions of past mayors and city council.

“Further, the City is more than welcome to proceed with the project without provincial funding should they insist that the cost of the wind-down is more costly than the committed provincial contribution.

“By December, a new alternative route that extends further into southeast Calgary will be provided by the province to City Council for their consideration. When it is ready, we will be happy to talk to the City and discuss with them whether or not to proceed.

“If the City changes its mind and decides to build a Green Line that serves the needs of Calgary commuters, our provincial contribution remains on the table.”

This is huge! Historic capital investment in new schools and modular infrastructure for the next three years: $8.6 billion. For context, the highest investment in capital infrastructure is around $2.3 billion. A big win for Alberta’s children, students, families and schools.
