Sound advice for academic job hunters is to speak to people who used to work in the lab you’re applying to. I’m always happy to talk to anyone applying for positions at any labs I’ve worked in or with people I’ve worked with/for. Email here https://t.co/G52Nz71Pu7

6/ An argument re: we shouldn't be political is why should I have to pay a price for the past when things are better? That's a tragic viewpoint for profs to have who prize complexity. It isn't objectivity; it's willful ignorance. Our studies/subjects do not exist in outer space.

Did you, like me, really enjoy last week's superb @BBCSpringwatch, including learning some fascinating science e.g. rotating frog eggs? I have attempted to explain key scientific concepts in conservation for others of a nerdy disposition. Hope some enjoy.

A common piece of advice when choosing a supervisor is to ask their students about what they’re like.
I think a better way is to see where their old students are now. Have they finished, how long did it take them to finish, what are they doing now?
The reason why is because if you ask current students, you don’t know how open they are being, for a number of reasons.
Talk is cheap, and results are harder to fake.
