Apples & Afib? The Apple Heart Study was presented at the annual ACC meeting. Among other results, 34% of Apple Watch-detected irregular pulse were found to have Afib on follow-up EKG. The study was funded by Apple and conducted through Stanford.

FDA is struggling to regulate new cannabis products since approving Epidiolex, the first and only prescription cannabidiol, in 2018. Though most newer products are for recreational use, the FDA wishes to hold these products to the same rigorous standards

DOJ supports killing the ACA - the Justice Dept filed a letter supporting a Texas court ruling, that eliminating the tax penalty for those without insurance meant that the entire ACA is now invalid. The court ruling is currently undergoing appeal.

The US House will hold a hearing on drug pricing bills, such as “pay-for-delay” which targets brand-name companies who pay settlements so that other companies don’t bring a generic to market. So far, these bills have bipartisan support.

HIV eradicated for 2nd time: London patient remains HIV-free and off antiretrovirals x 18 mo after bone marrow transplant for lymphoma. The donor had rare CCR5 mutation. The 1st case, Timothy Brown, also received BMTs in ‘07 and ‘08 and is HIV-free today

Medicaid work requirements have so far been approved in 7 states (MI, WI, IN, KY, AR, NH, and AZ) and are awaiting approval in 8 other states (OH, VA, TN, AL, MS, OK, SD, and UT). Medicaid has been expanded so far in 36 states and DC.

Policy Bite: Congressional Democrats introduced a bill to allow people to buy into Medicare starting at age 50. “Medicare buy-in” would expand Medicare and keep private insurance - prior “Medicare for all” bills would eliminate most private insurance.
