Is your home prepared for storm season? ⛈️🌧️🌩️⚡

Today (1 September) marks the official start of the storm season in the ACT, bringing an increased risk of severe weather events throughout spring and summer.

🕑 Storms can develop with little warning and may bring torrential rain, damaging winds, large hail and lightning. These conditions can cause flash flooding, damage homes and businesses, and bring down trees and powerlines.

The ACT State Emergency Service is encouraging everyone to take a few simple steps to help protect their homes, loved ones and communities:
🍂 Clear gutters and drains
🏡 Trim overhanging branches
🪏 Secure loose outdoor items
⚒️ Repair existing damage to your home
👨🏽‍💻 Check your insurance and create an emergency plan

🚨 Don't just make an emergency plan. Test it.

The ACT Emergency Services Agency is inviting residents of Duffy, Rivett and Chapman to take part in Interrupted, an innovative community preparedness exercise designed to help households test their emergency plans before bushfire season.

📅 Sunday 20 September 2026
📍 Weston Creek (Duffy, Rivett and Chapman)

During the exercise, participants will receive realistic, clearly marked TEST warnings and scenario updates through the ESA website and Hazards Near Me app, replicating how information is shared and changes during a bushfire emergency. It's a chance to practise decision-making, understand warnings, and build confidence before a real emergency occurs.

✅ Connect with emergency services personnel and volunteers

Residents across Weston Creek may also notice planned emergency services and volunteer activities taking place throughout the day. This is a planned preparedness exercise, not a real emergency, and all exercise warnings will be clearly identified as TEST.

ACT Rural Fire Service members are continuing to support firefighting operations across North America, working alongside international partners in challenging conditions in both the United States and Canada.

Crews in the US have been supporting operations on the Little Giant Fire in Oregon and Washington, carrying out blacking out and mop-up work alongside specialist Hotshot crews.

This weekend will see the first ACT contingent returning home to Canberra after completing a successful deployment of more than a month.

The conditions our personnel are working in remain demanding, with heavy smoke, rugged terrain and even encounters with local wildlife all part of the job. Despite these challenges, our firefighters continue to demonstrate their professionalism, resilience and teamwork.

@ACT_Parks personnel are also involved in these deployments, a reminder of the depth of expertise that our territory can offer during major emergency events.

A big thank you to all of our deployed firefighters for representing Canberra on the world stage. We look forward to welcoming our returning crews home, and wish those still on deployment a safe and successful remainder of their time overseas. 🌎🚒

The ESA has launched new community engagement tools designed to help Canberrans better understand natural hazards and take practical steps to prepare for emergencies.

The new resources will help ESA’s volunteers deliver more engaging and effective community education across Canberra.

The tools include a bushfire burn table and a flood table, giving residents practical demonstrations of how natural hazards can impact homes, infrastructure and communities.

A new community engagement trailer, community pod and seasonal preparedness materials will also support ACT Rural Fire Service and ACT State Emergency Service volunteers at community events and gatherings.

These new resources are supported by the Australian Government's Disaster Ready Fund, which is administered by the @nemagovau

By helping people better understand their risks and empower them to take action before emergencies occur, our volunteers can help support stronger, safer and more resilient communities across Canberra.

If you see a fire truck with a red nose attached around Canberra, that’s in support of Red Nose Day, which is happening Thursday, 27 August.

To date, this important day has raised $20 million to fund research into causes of sudden infant death syndrome and stillbirth.

The funds also provide free support to families that have experienced stillbirth, sudden and unexpected death in infants, and miscarriage.

@AFACnews has released the Seasonal Outlook for Spring 2026, indicating there is an average risk of bushfire expected for the ACT this spring.

➡️ The long-range outlook for spring predicts warmer daytime and overnight conditions with below average rainfall.

➡️ Daytime and overnight temperatures are forecast to be warmer than usual throughout the season.

➡️ To manage bushfire risk, the ACT Rural Fire Service and land managers will continue implementing mitigation activities, including prescribed burns, physical fuel removal, and grass slashing or grazing throughout spring.

🔥 Volunteers from the ACT Rural Fire Service continue to make a valuable contribution on the firegrounds in North America, with crews now well-established across Washington State in the United States and British Columbia in Canada.

ACTRFS ground crew members are working on the Little Giant Fire in Washington State’s Chiwawa Valley, operating from Plain Fire Camp. These firefighters have been working along fire edges and road corridors, using hand tools to strengthen containment lines and reduce the risk of fire spread.

Local US agencies report to be closely assessing how Australian crews operate, as our firefighters showcase the skills, professionalism and strong work ethic our services are known for.

In British Columbia, ACTRFS firefighters are supporting wildfire operations across the province and, now well into their first 14-day rotation, are looking forward to a well-earned break during their upcoming rostered days off. Firefighters from @ACT_Parks are also continuing to contribute their expertise as part of the Australian deployment.

Meet Bronte, a Graduate Paramedic Intern who recently joined the ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS), where she has commenced 12 months of training.

After building experience across nursing, emergency healthcare, mental health and disability support, Bronte says she chose to join ACTAS over other services because of its strong sense of connection and teamwork.

She says ACTAS feels like a family, where people are valued and encouraged to grow throughout their careers.

Bronte is passionate about making her patients feel heard, informed and cared for, and is excited about her potential career pathways within the service.

💙 She has a busy year ahead and will soon be joining on-road crews for valuable, hands-on, experience as a paramedic.
