There is a misconception that footballers in Nigeria are not smart. That is why agents want to fool us by default. It is also why some people want to advise us on things we already know.

Once they know you are a footballer, they assume they know more than you, that you don’t know what you are doing, and it makes you wonder if there is a rule that says playing football in Nigeria means you will lose your ability to think.

They will tell you “this is (not) how it works,” forgetting that you are privy to the same information. The way they came across it is the same way you can, and you may even understand it better than them.

I wish more footballers would speak out so this false assumption can be debunked. Some footballers know more than some agents about how deals work; the only difference is that the latter calls himself an agent.

Sometimes I feel it is a deliberate effort to make you, as a footballer, feel you know nothing, so they can act like they are doing you a favour: “I know how this works, you don’t, and without me, you won’t amount to anything.”

The saviour complex is what most Nigerian agents sell, and some players sadly buy it.

To the players: please seek knowledge and understand how these things work to a reasonable extent, so no agent can come and play “saviour” in order to scam or cheat you.

Don’t let them lie to you that you don’t know anything when you actually do. Use your head and protect yourself.

May we not labour in vain.
