A Polish Catholic priest, St. Maximilian Kolbe heroically offered his life at Auschwitz in place of another prisoner, Franciszek Gajowniczek, who had a wife and children. When the Nazis selected him to die, Kolbe stepped forward and said:
“I am a Catholic priest from Poland; I would like to take his place because he has a wife and children.”

He died in the starvation bunker on August 14, 1941, giving his life in an extraordinary act of Christian charity. St. Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us!
