It's important to learn math not because you may need to do long division as an adult, but because it promotes rigorous thinking. IMO, history and causal inference are among the most important subjects a young person can study — math being central to the second.
A significant problem in public discourse right now is people's inability to critically evaluate causal claims (e.g., vaccines cause autism, deporting immigrants will solve the housing crisis, etc.). The less able people are to critically evaluate causal claims, the worse our democracy functions because people can be preyed upon for votes. You should promote anything that improves rigorous thinking, even if it doesn't have market value. In fact, we should stop thinking of education only in the context of what improves the economy.
IMO, this is distinct from knowing your own address (which Huang can avoid because he's wealthy). Memorizing facts like this may or may not be important, but it's distinct from rigorous thinking.
Having lived through a similar, nationwide version of this in Trump's model, Putin's Russia, it’s not easy to fight against. And Trump and many of his gang have passed the point at which they feel they can afford to lose power, even in Congress. It’s a perilous moment.
Amazon: Tariffs are making things more expensive.
White House: No they aren’t.
Amazon: *shows prices with tariffs*
White House: This is a hostile and political act!
Ukraine is Europe!
We stand by Ukraine.
We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the agressor.
Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge.
After Vance accused Zelensky of not saying thank you, Zelensky is now tweeting individual thanks to every single world leader expressing solidarity with Ukraine.
Three options here:
1. Selzer is right and Harris wins in a massive landslide
2. This poll is just a bad poll (it happens, but it happens to Selzer less than others)
3. Harris isn’t really winning IA but the poll is capturing late stage momentum that bodes well for WI,MI,PA
The Washington Post hasn’t sat out a presidential endorsement since 1988. Don’t tell me that Kamala Harris isn’t being held to unfair standards when the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post both had owners intervene to stop their own editorial boards from endorsing her. This is not how newspapers are supposed to work. This is the same Washington Post who claimed “democracy dies in darkness.”
No, it dies with clueless, terrible billionaires.
I’m sorry but the richest man on the planet casually telling a woman he’s not dating that he’s going to put a baby in her is so skin crawlingly creepy I don’t know where to start
I’ve spent a lot of my life sizing up political talent. The secret of success as a political consultant is working for candidates who are going to win anyway.
The talent disparity between the Dem and R parties is like nothing I’ve seen. What happened? R’s became more white, more evangelical, more angry when the rest of the country was becoming less white, more secular and more optimistic.
The better candidates were drawn to the D party. Trump exposed the Republican party as a fraud and now you have freaks like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk picking a freak like J.D. Vance. It takes a long time to develop talent and the R’s have squandered decades.
