Wise words here / we need to lift the shame of diagnosis but we in Clonakilty have come along way in that journey thanks to the commitment of our champions, schools and followers:
Many autistic people dread April! “Popular” symbols, memes & posts can be offensive, even damaging. Let’s start with the blue puzzle piece. Blue is a ‘boy’ colour when autistics come in all genders. The puzzle piece is childish and we are not a puzzle! #ActuallyAutistic
Thanks to everyone who helped share our Clonakilty Autism Friendly Town journey. Gillian, Joan and Joy travelled from Belfast to learn from our experience. @Fi_ferris from https://t.co/KMQ2fXdc9W, Saoirse & Aimee @shssclon Mark @BallynoeHouse@mikodwd
@AutisticDoctor@KarenScorerOT@SusanMadigan3 We adapted an Environmental Evaluation checklist from @AsIAmIreland when we work with organisations seeking accreditation. Ideally this would be done on the premises with an autistic adult. So many amazing and insightful conversations arose during this.
In 2018 I gave a talk for #GPs for @AClonakilty
Did not expect it to lead to explaining at least in part, why life expectancy is reduced for #Autistic people
Barriers can be insurmountable, leading to adverse outcomes
#Autism understanding is key
#AutisticHealthcare matters
“Adjustments for autism- specific needs are as necessary as ramps for wheelchair users” CW…adverse medical outcomes!
