Media reports had previously suggested that the terrorist group Hamas received tens of millions in donations via cryptocurrency. However, the blockchain analytical firm, Elliptic, which was cited in these reports, has clarified that the data was misinterpreted and the amounts were significantly exaggerated. Ian Talley, a Wall Street Journal reporter, had earlier mentioned that over $90 million in crypto went to terrorist groups, based on data from Elliptic.

In a recent blog post, Elliptic stated that while Hamas has experimented with fundraising using digital assets, the funds raised through this method are minimal compared to other sources. The company further emphasized that a major public crypto fundraising campaign by Gaza Now, a pro-Hamas news organization, managed to raise only $21,000 in cryptocurrency since October 7th. Due to the efforts of crypto businesses and researchers, a significant portion of this amount has been frozen.

The issue has drawn significant attention, with over 100 U.S. lawmakers, including U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, referencing these reports to support legislative actions targeting money laundering and sanctions abuses in cryptocurrency. Elliptic's recent clarification suggests that the issue of terrorism funding through crypto might not be as extensive as initially reported.
