@AnimeAmerica I know ppl are different & their abilities differ, but why do these new actors get so lost when trying to keep the impression going that they can’t keep up w/ the proper inflections & tones. Apu had a reverberation in the back of nose & upper throat- this is all lower throat.
@AnimeAmerica I’m sure I’ll get raked over the coals for this too, but honestly this bit sounds like the stereotypical “shouting asian” voice like in the episode where Homer eats the Fugu. Or the Japanese guy in the South Park ep where he fights w/ Tuong Lu Kim. Apu NEVER sounded like that.
@WhoShelf@OOCCouchGags The decision prioritized the witch hunt landscape of the time and the corporate safety angle more than anything else. If you think I like using the terminology witch hunt or having to defend ppl who use race as a weapon, I don’t. But the quest for purity has gone beyond too far.
@WhoShelf@OOCCouchGags Ignoring the fact that indian people were proud to have a hardworking representative of their ethnicity and culture in a mainstream tv show, you’re acting like the doc blew open an unknown, unseen world of hurt. It was opinion whether you saw Apu as a good or bad representation.
@WhoShelf@OOCCouchGags Idc what he says. If “The Problem with Apu” never came out and niche public opinion never surfaced, he would still be doing it. In the 28 years of him voicing Apu it was never a problem with anyone until it suddenly was. And during a time of cancelling and social outrage online.
@WhoShelf@OOCCouchGags It’s frankly really shitty to paint people who have an emotional or nostalgic attachment to a character and their voice as terminally online weirdos. The gaslighting is insane. Milhouse’s VO retired. It’s a totally different situation. Azaria was basically pressured to step away.
@bornposting Frankly another reason why it’s stupid the fuss that it caused & subsequent hiatus of the character. They waited until the fresh controversy was long dead & buried & then cast a person who is the same color, but still stuck him in a job that is seen as demeaning or stereotypical.
@droogettegal In the 28 years of Apu’s original voice and existence he never hit the note or cadence that is heard here when he’s saying his own name. So, no- not really.
@OOCCouchGags And before the usual responses to this opinion- the new Manjula voice doesn’t sound awful. It still shouldn’t matter what the actor looks like as long as they sound good- but it goes to show that it can be both. Apu’s new guy is trying, but isn’t hitting all the grooves.
@OOCCouchGags I was never the type of person nor would I think I would be the type to jump onto reactionary bandwagons involving “back in my day”-isms, but the whole paranoia around having to cast people based on who they are and not how they sound is antithetical to theater and performance.
