Sixteen dogs living in filth. A puppy that starved before anyone got there. A dog that lost an eye because nobody took it to a vet.

Winston, Georgia. Douglas County investigators walked into a home run by Jennifer and Joshua Caneup, the people behind Cane-9 Rescue and Sanctuary, a nonprofit that was supposed to be a lifeline for dogs on death row at metro Atlanta shelters. Instead they found 18 dogs packed into urine and feces with barely any air moving through the place. A second property in Tennessee turned up 37 more dogs, plus chickens, turkeys, and a pig, living among bones and the remains of other animals.

Records show this pair pulled roughly 250 dogs out of shelters over eight months, dogs that were supposed to get a second chance. Some of them never got adopted out. Some of them got the same shelter conditions with extra cruelty stacked on top, and a nonprofit logo to hide behind.

Jennifer and Joshua Caneup are each charged with 16 counts of animal cruelty and two counts of aggravated animal cruelty.

A rescue is supposed to be the escape hatch. These two turned it into the trap.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together! Beau is at the front of the kennel, leaning against the door to solicit attention as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he immediately comes forward to greet the assessor with soft head bunts. Beau allows and leans into all petting, occasionally tail flicking but not escalating with extended petting. He calmly walks out of the kennel and is easily picked up, remaining calm when held and continuing to tolerate all further attention when placed back into the kennel. Beau interacts with the observer, solicits/ appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. We recommend that Beau go to a home with some cat experience preferred and be well counseled in rough play, new home adjustment, and overstimulation. ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻

What my friends at ACC say about me: I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. A volunteer writes: Lazuli was brought to us in a pillowcase and without much information. That's a tough start but it's ok! We can always work with what we've got and what we're given to help us learn what the best forever family for someone looks like. It's just that Lazuli hasn't been particularly forthcoming. Loafed on top of her little den on a little nest of blankets, Lazuli greeted me like she was already totally over my visit. This is both completely fine and fair, but Lazuli's lack of interest in treats, toys, and pets have served to show us that she's in need of a little extra patience, a lot of extra love, and time to become the cat she wants to be. Another volunteer writes: Lazuli, brought to us in a pillow case by her finder is a young gal who needs a new beginning and a new history. Whatever life she had before entering our shelter took a toll on her. A kennel did not make her feel any better...Lazuli did not care for our efforts to acclimate her until she did, time helping too of course. Yep, Lazuli has been with us for more than two months! She is in adoptions now, often seen resting quietly in her cubby or in her"living room". She comes forward when her door is opened, samples treats and really plays well with catnip toys(on her own) and feather wands. She can get a little overexcited and might lightly swat(most often without nails)with petting. Lazuli needs a chance at a better life in a quiet adult only home with a patient, experienced and caring new owner who will make her feel safe, worthy and loved. Will you be Lazuli's Lucky Star? ❤️ 😻❤️ 😻❤️ 😻
