As part of #WorldAlzheimersDay2021 earlier this week, our team has put together a short animation to introduce ADAPT Lab and the kind of research we do! #WhyWeResearch
New study of common health conditions and how often they are diagnosed amongst ~22,000 autistic people in the UK.
Findings "may suggest under-diagnosis of common conditions in autistic people, particularly those with intellectual disability."

THREAD: Premature deaths of autistic people in the UK have been investigated for the first time. The study, led by Prof Josh Stott (@ADAPTlabUCL@UCLPALS), confirms that autistic people have reduced life expectancy, but the gap might not be as wide as previously claimed. (1/6)
The life expectancy gap for #autistic people is smaller than previously thought but there are still major inequalities that need to be addressed, finds a new study led by Prof Joshua Stott and Dr Elizabeth O'Nions @UCLPALS@UCLBrainScience https://t.co/SKF6xlBpEd

Autistic adults have poorer access to appropriate mental healthcare, despite being more likely to experience #anxiety or #depression than the general population, finds a new study led by PhD candidate @celbaou@UCLPALS@ADAPTlabUCL. Report by @BawdenTom https://t.co/ldvVdHvckh
Talking therapy might help some. But probably not as many as you might think. And some worrying observations: "significantly more likely to deteriorate compared with the comparison group"...
How effective, currently, are psychological therapies for anxiety and depression of autistic people? Evidence from ~8,500 autistic adults who accessed UK primary care services

Our latest research testing effectiveness of NHS psychological therapies for autistic people is published today, led by our brilliant PhD student @celbaou

These findings are important in acknowledging that people living with dementia can and do experience grief, and require additional support to cope with this experience
Also published today is our meta-synthesis looking at grief and loss in people living with dementia, led by fantastic PhD student @c_waddington
https://t.co/1apuqdfnz8
Five key dimensions of grief in people living with dementia were identified:
1. Grieving for the person I used to be
2. Grieving for how others see me
3. Grieving for the person I will become
4. Grieving for those who have died
5. What helps me with my grief

This study has also highlighted an under-representation of autistic adults in these services. This was even more substantial in autistic adults with intellectual disabilities. This calls for a need to improve access to psychological therapies for autistic people.
