The Internal Revenue Service has changed the amount teachers can deduct for out-of-pocket classroom expenses for things like books, materials, and other supplies to $300. The amount will increase in $50 increments in future years based on inflation.

Also included in the FY24 proposed budget is an increase for the Future Teachers of Alabama (FTA) Program which is a partnership between @alabamaachieves and AEA. The funding would increase stipend grants for teachers who sponsor FTA chapters from $500 to $2,500. #growourown

Supt. Mackey proposed $16 million in the FY24 budget to provide stipends for special education teachers at around $5,000. This was presented in last year's proposed budget but was not provided in the Governor's budget to the Legislature.

In the FY24 proposed budget, there is an increase of $200, 000 for teacher recruitment and $1.25 million for Technology in Motion, which is currently underfunded.

Also included in the FY24 proposed budget is a $5 million increase for career tech and $3 million increase for the Job for Alabama Graduates (JAG) program to place more JAG programs in local school systems.

There is a $1.3 million increase in the proposed budget to place mental health service coordinators. Supt. Mackey did mention that at least 10 school districts have declined funding for the coordinators.

Also in the FY24 proposed budget is a $5 million increase for student assessments and $1 million increase for ELL specialists.

Included in the FY24 budget proposal are increases for the Alabama Reading Initiative (by $8 million) to fully fund reading coaches in school systems and AMSTI by $3 million.

Currently being discussed is the FY24 Budget presented by Supt. Mackey and Asst. Supt. Brandon Payne. The board will not vote on the budget until the October meeting.

The #ALBOE recognized Superintendents from Montgomery, Autauga, Elmore, and Pike Road school systems for having Purple Star schools. The Purple Star program provides support for military students and their families.

The #ALBOE is now considering nominations from Sen. Greg Reed to the Alabama Public Charter School Commission. The names submitted are Ryan Cantrell and Ryan Kendall. Board members voted to appoint Ryan Kendall, with Stephanie Bell abstaining.

The #ALBOE passed a resolution to commend Christy Mead of Albertville City Schools as the 2022 Robert L. Morton award recipient. The award recognizes outstanding chief school financial officers in Alabama.
