Statement by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on the Passing of H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has learned with profound sadness of the passing of H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya, and a distinguished statesman of the African continent.
On behalf of the African Union, its organs and institutions, the Chairperson extends his deepest condolences to the Odinga family, the Government and people of Kenya, and to the entire African family mourning this immense loss.
“H.E. Raila Odinga was a towering figure in Kenya’s political life and a steadfast champion of democracy, good governance, and people-centered development. His decades-long commitment to justice, pluralism, and democratic reform left an indelible mark not only on Kenya but across the African continent. He inspired generations of leaders, including myself, and citizens alike through his courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in the power of dialogue and democratic institutions,” said the Chairperson.
“Mr. Odinga’s contributions extended far beyond national borders. As the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, he worked tirelessly to advance the continent’s integration and connectivity agenda, helping to lay the foundations for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader socio-economic transformation,” he added.
Chairperson Youssouf further noted: “Africa has lost one of its most visionary sons; a leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity. His legacy will continue to inspire our collective efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Africa.”
The African Union joins the Government and people of Kenya, and the entire continent, in celebrating the life, service, and enduring legacy of H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

DG Dr. Abdisalam Mohamed met in Nairobi with Mr. Hideki Matsunaga, the new World Bank Country Manager for Somalia and Mr. Alejandro De la Fuente, Senior Economist & Task Team Leader, to discuss the vital role of data in shaping Somalia’s development agenda.
SNBS has transformed into a leading national statistical institution driving data-informed decision-making. Through various surveys such as the Business Establishment Census, modernized & harmonized Consumer Price Index, poverty & national accounts statistics, SNBS now provides the data backbone for the National Transformation Plan, Vision 2060 and Somalia’s monitoring & evaluation systems.
Major ICT upgrades such as a central data center & the Somali National Data Archive (SoNADA), have boosted data access & transparency, increasing the number of publicly available datasets from 7 in 2019 to 11 in 2025. International partners, like the World Bank, now rely on SNBS data to produce poverty reports & analysis.
With further partnership, SNBS plans to expand coverage with a new Household Budget Survey, Somalia’s first agriculture census & a Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, further strengthening the national data ecosystem to power evidence-based policy & planning. @AbdisalamHumbul@abdirahm_omar

#Ethiopia: “The dam is on. There are now two big dams on the #Nile - the #GERD and the #Aswan Dam,” Professor John Rao Nyaoro.
Professor Nyaoro, former Executive Director of the Nile Basin Initiative (#NBI) and author of ‘Realizing the Water Security of the Nile Basin States’, said this in a comment in the wake of the completion of the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
“Now Egypt has got no alternative but to agree to come to the table, cooperate with all the Nile Basin states for equitable and reasonable utilization of the GERD so that they can also benefit,” he told Citizen TV over the weekend.
The State Department for Trade in partnership with Trademark Africa, the European Union and AESA East Africa hosted the final stakeholders' validation workshop for the Route-to-Market (RTM) Strategy for the Horticulture value chain.
The RTM Strategy will strengthen Kenya’s position as a source of premium horticultural products like avocados, mangoes, vegetables and herbs, opening up new opportunities in key markets such as the Kenyan and African markets, the EU, UAE and the Kingdom Saudi Arabia.
Speaking on behalf of the PS Acting Director for Internal Trade, Elizabeth Miguda, underscored the Government’s commitment to actualize the Value Chain Approach ingrained in the Agricultural Transformation Pillar of the Bottom-up Transformation Agenda. The RTM seeks to strengthen Kenya’s global position as a reliable source of horticultural products, while addressing business concerns in air and sea freight, cost of doing business, and business support programs.
Ms.Miguda emphasised that the strategy will ensure stakeholders across the horticultural value chain including fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers are part of building Kenya’s export success story.
