In his endeavours to evade accountability by justifying nonsense, he has just set an impossible precedent.

He focuses the issue on who “played the ball”.

His point is that because Saliba did not play the ball himself, his contact with Pedro is careless and therefore, a foul.

In which case, no player can ever make a block followed by contact without it being a foul. That’s it. Blocking with contact is over in English football.

Because a block does not constitute playing the ball. The ball is played onto the blocker by another player. That’s the whole concept of “blocking” a shot or a pass.

That means every time a defender or goalkeeper moves their body towards an onward attacking player… who then plays the ball (a pass or shot) against them, resulting in it being blocked by the defender or GK… and the defender’s or GK’s momentum carries them into the attacker… then it’s a foul and a penalty.

We’re currently watching a version of football where kicking your opponent multiple times in an off the ball incident isn’t a red card, but nudging a ball a few inches to supposedly delay a restart is a red card. This isn’t the game I grew up loving. It’s been completely ruined.
