AFP-NC Backs Gas Tax Pause, Says Years of Fiscal Discipline Made It Possible.

Today, we applaud the North Carolina General Assembly for approving a suspension of the state gas tax, made possible by years of responsible budgeting that built a robust Rainy Day Fund.

AFP-NC State Director @TylerJVoigt released the following statement:
“Today’s move demonstrates the value in responsible budgeting. North Carolina didn’t stumble into the ability to give families a break at the pump – our General Assembly built our Savings Reserve year after year by saying no to reckless spending and locking in real relief for North Carolina families. Because they did that work, we can afford to pause the gas tax.

“The gas tax suspension should also serve a starting point for more permanent reforms, such as eliminating the state income tax, levy limits on property taxes, and permanently lowering the gas tax. AFP-NC will continue to look for opportunities to improve government spending, so we can keep lowering the tax burden on North Carolinians.”

North Carolinians are paying too much for health care, and Treasurer @brad_briner is doing something about it.

He's working to lower costs for the State Health Plan, which covers hundreds of thousands of teachers, state employees, and retirees. He's also fighting to end Certificate of Need laws that let big hospital systems block competition and keep prices high.

More competition means more choices and lower costs for families. Watch to see how he's taking on the status quo.

Western North Carolinians have been feeling the strain of rising gas prices for far too long.
