We are pleased to announce that AFT Local 6262 has ratified a new 2 year CBA and the COC Board has voted to approve the agreement. We received the largest 2 year salary increase in COC history. The increases range from a minimum of 24.75% up to 29.18%.
This lifts our adjunct salaries from the bottom third in the region, up to the top quartile. Additionally, we signed agreements to ensure academic freedom in curriculum selection & expanded participation in college governance by adding additional paid seats on campus committees.
Even in CA, where public employees likely have the best rights in the country, labor law is still profoundly stacked against workers and in favor of employers.
@TimothyRCain Agreed. Thank you for the assist. More information can be found here https://t.co/Q41vRubWrG (see the Response to Imposing Terms, Factfinding Executive Summary, and PERB complaint appeal) & here https://t.co/e6WeaV9UIs
@TimothyRCain We’ve received very little media attention. It’s really unfortunate, because taxpayers deserve to know how their money is spent. We’re a single school community college district with some of the highest paid administrators in the country. Meanwhile, our adjuncts live in poverty.
@TrevorGriffey Yes it is. Even worse, we’re a single college district, but we have a “Chancellor” paid $506,813/yr and a “Vice Chancellor” paid $349,879/yr. And our Board of Trustees get Health Insurance for meeting a few hours each month. Priorities!
The adjunct faculty at College of the Canyons demand better pay and benefits!
We are the lowest paid in the region and we are one of only three colleges that do not offer healthcare coverage to part-time faculty.
@TrevorGriffey That’s right. This survey is for adjuncts with 5 years experience, which is about the average length of service at COC. Newly hired adjuncts earn substantially less.
Administrators talk about promoting DEI, but actions speak louder than words. The adjunct faculty are the most diverse employee group at College of the Canyons, and yet adjuncts receive lower pay & benefits and have less job security than every other employee group at the college
@TrevorGriffey The students have become the masters. Maybe this will inspire the lecturers to fight for better wages. Higher education has needed this kind of reckoning for a long time.
Congratulations to the UC graduate teaching assistants on their new tentative agreement! They will soon earn more than a Ph.D. level adjunct instructor with years of experience teaching at College of the Canyons. ✊ Solidarity

@TrevorGriffey You’re right they do, and they have much better benefits. Hopefully, when these students graduate they’ll bring their activism with them to their first post graduate teaching jobs!
@GerminalUSA @ruaaup_ptl The story is the same from coast to coast. Colleges are using adjunct labor to pay for overstaffed and overpaid administrators.
Adjunct faculty have the same minimum qualifications and teach the exact same courses as full-time faculty. Nevertheless, we earn far less money than full-time faculty. We demand equal pay for equal work!
