some buddhist stories are functionally jokes. here’s one i heard from a tibetan guy:
buddha is traveling along and meets a man that lives at the edge of a large river. he’s a guru with many students, and when buddha gets there, the guru explains his abilities.
“i can walk across this river,” the guru says. “it took me my whole life to cultivate this ability. first, i had to understand myself. that took one decade. then, i had to understand water - this took another decade.”
“then,” the guru continues, “i had to understand that there is no water. the water is just a temporary phenomenon - a conditional aggregate of interdependent causes and conditions. that took another decade. finally, i had to understand that this phenomenon, which i call water, is not separate from the phenomenon that i call ‘me’, my self.”
“after this final decade, i understood that i create the water, and the water is part of me. now, i can walk right across the top of this river - and i do this every day. cultivating this spiritual gift has been my life’s work.”
and the buddha says, “wow. that’s really great - but”, gesturing downstream, “there is a bridge about a mile down that way”.
installing an AC: the directions have an illustration of the window. underneath, it says “illustration only”. fascinating. what else would it be? the actual window? they must send this out to people with no concept of what an image is, who may attempt to climb into the drawing.
