SITUATION DETECTED: Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Demis Hassabis have signed a joint open letter calling on Congress to mandate screening of synthetic nucleic acid orders, citing AI’s rapidly improving ability to assist with biological research as an urgent biosecurity risk.
@SimoneHCollins@Trololosh69 Wait, really? Doesn't this go against your philosophy of thinking that property values are going to collapse because of falling fertility, like in Detroit? Or am I misunderstanding what you guys believe?
@Empty_America Pantheon sort of worked as art set in the present. Even had LLMs.
But otherwise, yeah, very very very hard to think of stuff. (Even things which pretend to be in the present are often faux-1990s -- depicting the Internet in an entertaining way is really, really hard).
On LinkedIn, a lawyer posted a Brazilian judgment sanctioning counsel for "prompt injection"! In white on white text, the brief instructed any AI reading the brief to respond "superficially."
That's ... very very interesting.
@thebeltwayagent There was a large discontinuity here after the 2016 cycle. Many people were motivated to seek careers in politics (as staffers, at think-tanks, and so on) by the Trump or Sanders campaigns (or even Cruz a little bit) who had very different personality profiles.
@lyndonbajohnson This article from 2002 has Ehud Barak explicitly saying Arafat negotiated in bad faith, and Clinton agreeing with him without using those words: https://t.co/BFrtlxaxcP
Oslo was a successful negotiation. But it was not a complete peace deal, and ultimately never completed.
@_fat_ugly_rat_ This chart is domestic transplants only, who are heavily conservative m. Your numbers are domestic transplants + immigrants; the latter group is *not* so heavily conservative.
BUSINESSES ARE NOW USING PREDICTION MARKETS TO HEDGE PROMOTIONS LOL
A BAR IN NYC HAD A PROMO IF THE KNICKS WIN, THEY COVER EVERYONE’S DRINKS FOR THE NIGHT
THE BAR PLACED A $5K HEDGE ON KALSHI THAT PAYS OUT IF THE KNICKS WIN
THE BAR WINS EITHER WAY
Do you guys remember a month or so ago when the girl in Lebanon didn’t want to take her test the next day so she told Avichai Adraee that Hezbollah was using her school to store weapons, prompting him to deliver a stern lecture about the importance of being a good student?
It was hilarious and strangely wholesome
The northwest corner, which is ethnically Dutch, is *way* more Republican than the rest of the state, like routinely 85%-15%. Opposite of the problem Democrats have in many places where their support comes from black voters who are too concentrated; in Iowa it's the Dutch who are too concentrated.
Their last win was 1986. 1991 was a third-place crushing, and then in 1996 they won 0.4%.
It has been 35 years since 1991; the youngest Socred voters are 53. Now, that's still younger than the median voter (...at least in the US, and I know BC is demographically older), but *probably* most people who voted in the 1991 election (median voter age late 50s now, maybe early 50s then?) are now dead. Certainly true for the 1986 election.
@bolsademiedo I wonder how many decades we are away from that -- Anglo interventions in Iraq happen roughly every 20-30 years (1918, 1941, 1961, 1991, 2003, 2014). It'll probably happen, though, judging by history.
