There are actors whose faces and voices become so familiar that we know them as much by their presence as by their performances. Olu Jacobs was one of them. For generations of viewers, his name alone was reason enough to watch a film.

With his passing at 84, Nigeria bids farewell to a beloved actor who gave us decades of memorable performances and helped build the Nigerian film industry that we celebrate today.

My thoughts are especially with his wife, Joke Silva, their children and the entire Jacobs family. As the country mourns a great actor, they mourn a husband, father and grandfather. May they find comfort in the years they shared with him and in the love so many Nigerians have for him.

On behalf of my family, I extend heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and colleagues across the film industry. May Almighty God comfort all who mourn him.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Olu Jacobs’ passing at 84. Nigeria has lost a cultural treasure, and African cinema has lost one of its finest voices.

Olu Jacobs brought a rare dignity and power to the screen. His performances reminded us that Nigerian stories deserve a global audience, and his dedication helped build the industry we celebrate today. His greatest tribute will be the generations of actors who continue to draw inspiration from his work.

I am profoundly saddened by the passing of Olu Jacobs at the age of 84. Nigeria has lost far more than a great actor; we have lost an institution, a cultural icon and one of the finest ambassadors of our creative spirit.

For generations of Nigerians, Olu Jacobs was a familiar and commanding presence in our homes. That unmistakable voice, the dignity he brought to every role and the sheer force of his talent made him one of those rare artists who did not merely act before an audience, but became part of our collective memory.

Long before Nollywood became a global phenomenon, Olu Jacobs was already carrying the Nigerian name with distinction. Through decades of dedication to his craft, he helped lay the foundations upon which an entire industry would rise. He gave life to our stories, dignity to our culture and inspiration to countless younger actors who followed the path he helped to clear.

His passing therefore feels deeply personal to a nation that watched him, admired him and grew up with him. The curtain may have fallen on an extraordinary life, but the characters he gave us, the standards he set and the generations he inspired will continue to speak for him.

I saw a Hausa guy selling oranges by the roadside on Sunday after church. He was peeling some and arranging them in trays in his wheelbarrow.

I wanted to make orange juice, so I told him to give me ₦15,000 worth of oranges (120 pieces). He looked at me like, “What do you want to do with 120 oranges?” I laughed and told him I needed them for something.

I was in a hurry, so I asked if he could peel all 120 for me. He said yes and promised he would be done in one hour, at most one hour thirty minutes.
I had never met this man before. I had literally just seen him by the roadside. So as I was leaving, he asked me to give him at least half the money first so he could be sure I would come back.

I understood where he was coming from, so I gave him 9,000 naira and told him I’d be back in one hour thirty minutes. I even asked if he’d still be at the same spot, and he said yes. I eventually came back after TWO HOURS.

This man was still there. My 120 oranges were completely peeled, properly packaged and ready for me. I was genuinely impressed.

I don’t know if it was because I was speaking Hausa with him 😂, but I’ve always known Hausa people to be very honest. Their yes is their yes. This man could have easily disappeared with my ₦9,000 or sold the oranges to someone else, but he stayed, did exactly what he promised and waited for me.

Very honest businessmen, honestly.
