Supporting Arsenal is a continuing education programme.

The curriculum includes probability, emotional regulation, tactical theory and the dangerous human habit of saying, 'This is our year.'

A match begins. You are calm. One misplaced pass later, you have developed a complete view on squad construction. By halftime, the family has been informed not to ask unnecessary questions.

Then Arsenal scores and all prior evidence is deleted.

Football makes intelligent adults negotiate with events they cannot control. Perhaps that is the appeal.
