Thank you @kelseyarolfe the excellent article on #Right2Repair. It often seems that our homes have become a short “pit stop” on the long road between a Chinese factory and our local garbage dump. This is expensive for us, very bad for the environment and undermines our domestic economy.
Ever wonder why your local repair shop can’t diagnose what is wrong with your car and must send you on a much more expensive trip to your dealership, why it is cheaper to buy a new appliance than to repair the old one, or why a perfectly functioning replacement GPS unit will not work even though it was designed and built for your tractor?
It’s because large global manufacturers have exploited measures in the Copyright Act that were intended to protect creators and artists, and used them to increase their long term control the over software embedded in the products that they sell — at the expense of consumers, small businesses and farmers.
Both Bill #C244 and #C294 (amendments to the Copyright Act) will help you to increase your maintenance and repair options, and reduce your costs. They will be studied by the Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy in the autumn. As the Senate sponsor of #C244, I’m very much looking forward to that study.
These two bills represent Canada’s first baby steps in catching up to the global #RightToRepair movement, and will reduce diagnosis, maintenance and repairs costs related to our appliances, devices, equipment, cars, etc.

Thank you @WilsonMiaoRC for tabling Bill #C244 today, & @_BryanMay for your support. Canadians deserve the #RightToRepair, and the ability to choose where their cars are repaired. This is good news for consumers & #smallbiz. We hope to see broad party support for this Bill again.
