🌲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲. 𝟮𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.

In Finland, Google has cleared approximately 330 hectares of forest for a new data centre.

That’s an estimated 𝟮𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀. Gone.

And according to Finnish authorities, the clearing took place without the required environmental impact assessments.

⚠️ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴:

🌲 250,000 trees felled at Muhos.
🌲 Another estimated 150,000 at Otanmäki.
💰 €13 billion in planned AI infrastructure investment.
🏗️ 145 new data centres in various stages of planning across Finland.

Authorities have ordered Google to halt work at two sites. Google has apologised and says it will comply.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

We’re racing to build ever more powerful artificial intelligence.

We celebrate bigger models, faster inference, and increasingly sophisticated systems.

But behind every AI breakthrough lies physical infrastructure.

Land. Energy. Water. Raw materials.

And sometimes, entire forests.

🌍 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀.

AI infrastructure brings investment and economic opportunities. But those benefits don’t eliminate the need for environmental accountability.
