In an important step underscoring Iraq’s stature, the capital city of Baghdad has been selected to host Expo 2029 Garden. The decision followed proposals presented at the 77th Annual Congress of the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH), held in Ghent, Belgium, where a vote was cast and the official announcement made to award Baghdad the honor of hosting this international event.
Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani praised the efforts of Iraq’s representatives, who worked for a year and a half to secure Baghdad’s selection as the host of Expo 2029 Garden. Their efforts included a visit by a delegation from the international organization to Baghdad to review Iraq’s preparations, culminating in this important and exceptional achievement. Iraq’s bid triumphed over competing nations including Thailand, Malaysia, Argentina, and Australia.
Hosting Expo 2029 Garden in Baghdad will promote sustainable development across various sectors, including advancing the recommendations of the Climate Conference by contributing to environmental improvements. It will also elevate Iraq’s standing in global indices of tourism, stability, and security. Moreover, it will attract millions of international visitors, as the Expo 2029 Garden is the world’s second-largest event after the World Cup. The event will feature a wide range of environmental, cultural, and entertainment activities that showcase Iraq’s ancient civilizations and rich history.
The hosting of this event will also revitalize Iraq’s environmental, tourism, and agricultural sectors, which are among the government’s top priorities outlined in its program. The Prime Minister directed that work begin immediately to meet all requirements for this major international event.
