After months of separation, 80-year-old Maurice Munugwe from Rubelizi, DRC, has finally returned home and reunited with his family through the ongoing voluntary repatriation process.
Supported by AIRD and UNHCR, Maurice was safely escorted via the Busuma site to the transit centre in the DRC, with special assistance provided to address his hearing challenges throughout the journey.

On 28 May 2026, 1,030 Congolese refugees voluntarily returned home from the Busuma site with support from UNHCR, AIRD Burundi, AIRD Congo, and government authorities.
From transportation and baggage management to reception assistance, hot meals, temporary accommodation, and family reunification support, every step was coordinated to ensure a safe, dignified, and seamless journey.
This successful operation reflects our continued commitment to voluntary repatriation carried out in safety, dignity, and close partnership with all stakeholders.
