We can't make climate progress w the same old playbook. We need a green economic populism that brings immediate, material benefits to the working class—tackling both carbon and the cost-of-living crisis. We can start local rn.
Thrilled to share my NYT op-ed w @triofrancos!
Mayor Mamdani and his transportation commissioner, Mike Flynn, have suggested that it was a mistake for the city to build the BQE 70 years ago.
Despite this, they are planning to restore the BQE, and build a temporary highway above the Brooklyn Bridge.
HUGE: Spain’s biggest unions have announced a nationwide general strike over housing issues on November 11, just two weeks before a newly called snap election.
Rising rents and evictions have taken center stage in the country over the last month, leading to massive protests and a proposed eviction moratorium which was shot down by the conservative elements in Parliament.
Now the country's two largest unions, UGT and CCOO, have agreed to strike together for the first time in 14 years, with other unions set to join as well.
"Every year that we wait and don’t remove pollution from communities, that is costing people in their lives. And so speed is a progressive value in my book. I think we have to build institutions that can move a lot faster."
So great to record this episode with @drvolts at Town Hall Seattle. Check it out!
O gigante acordou!
Eu nunca vi tanta gente engajada em todo o país, nas ruas e nas redes, que entenderam o senso de urgência. Neste momento, estudantes ocupam a Candelária, no centro do Rio. Vamos virar esse jogo!

The Center for Biological Diversity is an ally in the fight against creeping authoritarianism. They were instrumental in the closing of Alligator Alcatraz, for example.
I think people who have tiny lobbying shops and write on Substack should not be throwing stones at them.
NEW: We find strong support for the Green New Deal for Public Housing, which would upgrade the U.S. public housing stock to be zero-carbon and energy-efficient.
@Revkin@JaneAFlegal@SamsungUS Helpful, thanks! We def need to consider every option to get more transmission and clean power. And fingers crossed they get your HP fixed!!
Every year that we don't do a wartime mobilization on heat pumps, we're ruining people's lives. Heat pumps will always outperform heating oil, cut costs, add summer AC. And would be fantastic for labor, small businesses, worker co-ops.
@HandNF Right the point of the analogy is we need a planned all systems approach. That ofc means more clean energy, storage, transmission, etc. Not doing a whole NE plan in one tweet.
I miss Econ Twitter, so I'm launching my new Substack to provide a space for us to have a serious conversation about Anti-Fascist Economics.

The great Marxist economist Anwar Shaikh has died. He made crucial contributions to crisis theory, to the critique of free trade, to the labor theory of value…But for me his work provides the economics to understand class segmentation. I was reading him on this earlier today.
“The lesson for progressives everywhere is clear: economic growth and ambitious reform will count for little unless working people feel the benefits in their daily lives.”
I wrote for @guardian on what’s at stake in Spain’s snap elections, called amid massive housing protests - and why Pedro Sánchez’s government has failed to turn steady economic growth into broad popular support. https://t.co/3zT59ntZao
Yes, the left is in gentle decline and there’s some class de-polarization. The biggest story, most dramatic in legislative elections, is the extreme right completely swallowing up the center right—also a global phenomenon.
Historically the primary axis of Brazilian politics has been the upper class voting right and the working class voting left.
This is still true, but for the 2nd election in a row Brazil has mirrored the global education polarization trend of working class voters trending right
I translated Antonio Martins’ important assessment of Brazil’s electoral disaster, please read/share!
“An electoral turnaround is possible, however difficult. But the illusion that the left can govern without a long-term project, without confronting the powerful, and without popular mobilization must be left behind”
