A papyrus fragment found in Egypt preserves the oldest known surviving prayer to the Virgin Mary.

Known as Sub Tuum Praesidium, the prayer reads:

“Beneath your compassion we take refuge, O Theotokos. Do not despise our petitions in time of trouble, but deliver us from dangers.”

The fragment, catalogued as Rylands Papyrus 470 and now held at the John Rylands Library in Manchester, has traditionally been dated as early as the 3rd century, although scholars have proposed later dates as well.

What makes it remarkable is the use of the title “Theotokos” — Mother of God — for Mary centuries before the Council of Ephesus formally affirmed the title in AD 431.

The surviving papyrus is ancient, but the prayer itself may be older than the manuscript that preserves it.

One of the earliest surviving witnesses to Christians asking for the intercession and protection of the Virgin Mary. ✝️

One of the Catholic Church’s most famous mysteries unfolds three times each year in Naples.

The Blood of St. Gennaro, preserved in two sealed glass ampoules inside Naples Cathedral, is traditionally believed to liquefy during three annual celebrations: the saint’s feast on September 19, the Saturday before the first Sunday of May, which commemorates the translation of his relics, and December 16, marking his intercession during the 1631 eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

The phenomenon has been documented for centuries and continues to draw thousands of pilgrims.

The liquefaction is above all a reminder of St. Gennaro’s witness, who gave his life for Christ around the year 305 and remains the beloved patron of Naples.

This is one of the few color photos of an apparition of the Virgin Mary. It was taken on September 3, 1989, in a church in Hungary when an art restorer asked someone to take a photo of him on the scaffolding while he was working on a painting behind the altar. When he turned around, he saw with his own eyes a holy figure that looked like the Virgin Mary holding a small child in her arms. However, the photographer saw nothing. Fortunately, the miracle was indeed immortalized in the photo he took.
