Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud plans to leave for Addis Ababa this afternoon as crisis in South West State escalates.

HSM will try to persuade Ethiopia not to support South West State President Abdiaziz Laftagaren and not to deploy its forces against the armed campaign by Villa Somalia to depose the regional leader.

Pro-Mogadishu forces have already taken over a string of towns - Barawe, Buur Hakaba, Huddur - as they match towards Baidoa, a city controlled by Ethiopian forces.

HSM's new ask will likely fall on deaf ears in Addis.

And here is why?

1. Addis knows Laftagareen, prefers the devil they know rather than a new leader whom they cannot trust, especially one too much aligned or influenced by the pro-Cairo elements in Villa Somalia.

2. Laftagareen's robust opposition to the deployment of Egyptian troops to Somalia is valued by Ethiopia.

3. Abandoning Laftagareen and allowing Mogadishu to oust the regional leader sends a bad signal to Somali allies - that Ethiopia cannot be a trusted and dependable ally.
