I almost burnt down the whole house in America when I wanted to prepare a Nigerian delicacy. I felt so embarrassed!
But what happened afterwards made me regret ever thinking of doing so.
Five months into my arrival in the United States, I was already missing home. But one thing was particular about this nostalgic feeling: my cravings for home-made food. So I had to spring into action.
I needed to make ẹba and ẹfọ riro. And to make ẹfọ, I needed to fry my palm oil.
That's where my problem began.
I put the palm oil on the fire and quickly went upstairs to pick something. Before I came back, smoke had engulfed the whole room and the fire alarm had come alive.
OMG, this bell can shout eehn...
The false fire alarm, together with the smoke that was now everywhere, made my roommate jump off his bed and call 911.
These people were as fast as light.
But before they arrived, I did everything possible to silence the fire alarm. Instead, I ended up provoking it more.
The thing was shouting with renewed energy.
I knew there was no fire anywhere, but there was no way to convince my American roommate.
In Nigeria, it's a normal thing to see smoke when you're frying palm oil.
But America is not Nigeria anyways.
And when the 911 people arrived, with their sirens blaring non-stop right in front of our house, I was so embarrassed that I wanted the ground to open its mouth and swallow me.
At that point, even the palm oil that caused the problem was no longer hungry for ẹfọ.
They came, checked everywhere, and confirmed that everything was fine.
But the embarrassment?
That one stayed with me for the whole month.
For weeks, anytime I heard a siren in the distance, my heart would skip a beat. I thought they had come back to arrest me for attempted palm oil terrorism.
@eolam8739@jon_d_doe Well… maybe her discernment is low but doesn’t have much to do with her relationship with God. You might serve God well and still experience such if basics you should have held onto are ignored.
