Donald Trump approved the first military execution in the US in more than 60 years

The president authorized the execution of former major and Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, who carried out a mass shooting at Fort Hood in Texas in 2009. The sentence is planned to be carried out by firing squad.

The recommendation to Trump was submitted by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Hasan killed 13 people and wounded more than 30. After his arrest, he was left partially paralyzed and spent more than ten years in the military prison at Leavenworth.

For the US Army, this will be the first execution of a death sentence since 1961. Firing squads have not been used in the US military since the time of World War II.
