First they came for the software engineers and I said nothing for I was not a software engineer.
Then they came for the mathematicians and I said nothing for I was not a mathematician.
Then they came for the lawyers and I said "make sure you get all the lawyers"
This is my cuckoo theory of phones: like how cuckoo birds lay their eggs in reed warbler nests so that their chick (which hatches first) can push the warbler eggs out of the nest, phone use (especially social media) is like brood parasitism - it pushes out our important activities like being active, creative, and intentional, so that we feed all our attention to the imposter
The cuckoo is pushing your vocabulary, attention span, and motivation to do hard things out of your nest
The cuckoo is also where the word cuckoldry comes from, originally in the 1200s meaning to raise another man’s child, but now generally means to watch someone else live in your place - phones cuck us out of our own lives, every time you watch someone’s grwm or day in the life you’re watching someone else enjoy themselves instead of enjoying your own time
the right way to use model capabilities is not to ship 10x more features to prod
it's to spend more time understanding your users, trying experiments, building prototypes, learning about things you don't understand so that you can ship things that actually work
i deleted instagram about 5 years ago, so i had almost forgotten what it feels like to have it in your life
watching people around me use it now feels strange
you end up checking the daily lives of people you haven’t seen in ten years, people you probably wouldn’t even stop to talk to if you crossed them on the street.
random people from your past become permanent background characters in your mind.
then add the fact that a huge part of instagram is effectively a dating product
if you’re already in a long-term relationship, keeping that constant stream of attention, comparison and other people’s lives in your head has destroyed countless couples
after being off it for years, the whole thing looks much more extreme from the outside.
The "whiteboard defense:" I should be able to pull you aside at any moment and ask you to explain any customer-facing system you've shipped. You should be able to clearly explain how it works and defend the decisions you made. This is my benchmark for responsible AI usage.
I don't expect line-level familiarity with the code. I don't care if you remember the exact function name or implementation detail. You may not even know it. I don't care.
But if I ask "why did you do X instead of Y?", "what happens if this actor behaves maliciously?", "what data structure did you use here and why?", or "where does this fail?" you should be able to answer confidently.
For PoCs, demos, experiments, whatever: I don't care. Generate 100% of it and understand none of it. Speed over quality every time in those specific scenarios.
But if you're shipping customer-facing work, you can't be shipping things you don't understand at a high level.
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.
