After months of campaigning by the @ALSWA_Ltd & @hrw the WA gov has finally confirmed it will install air conditioning at Roebourne Prison
It really shouldn’t have taken this long for the @MarkMcGowanMP gov to provide safe & humane prison conditions https://t.co/Lx5W4nDKlS

Feeling so sad for the whole family and community. Keeping our children safe is the bare minimum of our responsibilities and so often we fail even to do that.
Shame
Western Australia had a budget surplus of $5.7 billion but the @MarkMcGowanMP gov continues to refuse to install air-conditioning at Roebourne prison where 90% of the prison population are Indigenous
Last summer, temps reached over 50° in Roebourne

@ALSWA_Ltd lawyer @AliceVBarter said her clients had told her they felt like their bodies were cooking
"I've been told by men at Roebourne prison that they feel their brains are boiling...That they're not sleeping at night and finding it difficult to function during the day."
The WA4HRA Campaign will be running a series of Human Rights Webinars in November/December 2022.
More details will be posted on our social media pages over the next few weeks.

On a recent trip to the East Kimberley region, the Your Story team based at @ALSWA_Ltd, Saminder & Bonina, met with the Kununurra community to talk about the Disability Royal Commission @DRC_AU.
“It was a huge success with about 40-50 community members attending,” said Boni.
“It is an indictment on the government for a Supreme Court justice to have found that it has acted unlawfully – and for a young person in its care to have been treated in this way,” says ALSWA Legal Services Director, Peter Collins.
