MY UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR PRESIDENT CLAUDIA SHEINBAUM PARDO AND A RESPECTFUL REFLECTION ON PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP
It does not surprise me that, in the United States government's onslaught against Mexico's, the same interventionist and utterly unscrupulous practices as always are being deployed, now under the pretext of combating migration and narcoterrorism. It is clear that these attacks are not motivated, as our President Sheinbaum rightly said this past Sunday, by a genuine interest in solving the grave problem that Americans unfortunately suffer through the prolonged pandemic of addiction to drug use; no, this is a matter of a political and electoral nature.
To be clearer: certain United States officials are scheming to weaken Morena and strengthen the right-wing opposition in Mexico, with the aim of once again having at their disposal a government that is sellout, corrupt, mafia-like and cruel and, for that very reason, vulnerable, subservient and faithful to their interventionist designs. Moreover, they trust that they can once again deceive many American citizens with the Hitlerian propaganda tactic of repeating lies over and over, with an eye to the coming November elections, in order to keep blaming Mexico for each and every one of their ills. Although, I reiterate, none of this is new, and arrogance tends always to be predictable, especially in times of decadence.
The only thing that gives me pause is the surprising change in attitude of President Donald Trump, especially in the relationship with Mexico. Speaking of what I know firsthand and can prove, the Trump of today is different from the one I dealt with. In my experience, there were several matters we resolved, for the good of our peoples, through reasoned dialogue and without confrontation. On few occasions did we have disagreements; in fact, I recall only one heated dispute, when, over the migration issue, he threatened to impose tariffs, which was going to lead us to respond in kind, but fortunately we reached an agreement before the conflict escalated.
While I was president, he refrained from speaking ill of Mexicans and from mentioning the wall; we signed the new trade treaty; he placed no obstacles on exports under sanitary, environmental or other pretexts, as is common with tomatoes, tuna or cattle. Nor did he raise the charges on the sending of remittances; he accepted our proposal not to include Mexico's oil in the treaty, out of respect for our energy sovereignty. He helped us during the COVID epidemic; on two occasions he offered me the support of agents or special forces for the fight against crime, and he understood my disagreement. At the end of his term, relations were so good and there was so much trust in our government that, when elements of the DEA and the Department of Justice, in revenge against the Mexican Army, fabricated a case file against General Salvador Cienfuegos—Secretary of Defense during the government of President Peña—and detained him in the United States, I asked President Trump to allow us to review the evidence, because we doubted its authenticity, to which he agreed, ordering that the case be filed in Mexico; here, indeed, it was shown that it was a political reprisal contrived to subdue a fundamental institution of the Mexican State which, according to the mindset and the interests of the officials in Washington and at the U.S. embassy, was supposed to fall in line with them, as they had managed to do with the Secretariat of the Navy during Calderón's term.

What is more, on one occasion he consulted me as to whether it was advisable to label drug traffickers as terrorists; I told him that this egregious error must not be committed, and the next day he announced that he had taken my opinion into account and that he would not sign any legal instrument to that effect. I keep in mind that I warned him of what would happen and that now, after they made him change his mind, it is unfortunately coming to pass, not only in Mexico but also in other parts of the world: that with the mere labeling of someone as a narcoterrorist or as representing a supposed threat to the security of the United States, one is granted a license to kidnap, hunt down and execute, in extraterritorial fashion, any person without any evidence, trial or sentence whatsoever. It is like the *ley fuga* or *mátalos en caliente*—the most abominable violation of human rights.
That Donald Trump, at a public event we held at the White House, acknowledged that Mexican migrants were hardworking and contributed to the development of the United States.
That is why it intrigues me and I ask myself: Why did President Trump change so much in just a few years? One could answer that these are other times and that circumstances have changed; that this is his final term as president and that he is not obliged to moderate himself, since reelection is not at stake; or that he simply no longer exercises his leadership directly as before and relies more frequently, in decision-making, on his inexperienced, resentful and fanatical advisers, who are not exactly statesmen.
I do not believe the first—that is, the change of circumstances—because in the case of Mexico, President Sheinbaum has been efficient, responsible, prudent and respectful. In essence, by her deeds and her works, she has proven to be the best president Mexico has had in our time. Nor do I hold that the new manner of governing of the president of the United States has to do with the end of his term, because a person like Trump cares more about history than about the office, and he would not wish to be remembered as the man responsible for an economic and social-welfare crisis that would also cost his party elections and, above all, to be identified as a reckless ruler who quarreled with almost the whole world—including the pope and even his neighbors in Canada and Mexico, our beloved country, the homeland of 40 million people who live, struggle with creativity and work honestly in the United States and who, even while grateful for the opportunities they found in that great nation, could never forget the lesson—paraphrasing Calle 13—that "he who does not love his homeland does not love his mother."
Rather, I attribute Trump's surprising change to his false friends and advisers, at home and abroad, who have been luring him into vile and sinister ventures. For that very reason, I do not rule out—and I wish—that President Trump will set things right; I hope he returns to governing as before, with enthusiasm, personally, not delegating what is fundamental, trusting in his practical judgment and his sure instinct, and that he sends to hell the parasites who surround and goad him, whoever they may be, be they shills, manipulators, petty despots, freeloaders, thieves, coppers, shyster lawyers, speculators, freebooters, potentates, social climbers or scoundrels.
For the good of all, may the other Trump return.

Drawing on his own personal experience dealing with the US president, former Mexican President López Obrador reflects on the changes in Trump’s approach to Mexico, before expressing his desire for Trump to push his advisors aside and return to his earlier style of governance.
