Virtue-signalling has come in for a lot of criticism in recent years. Rightly so.
But there is something worse, and we are seeing more and more of it:
>Viciousness-signalling<.
When Trump speaks, what he is usually doing is exactly that. He is saying: We are going to treat those we don’t like viciously.
When the hard and far Right, including Musk - and quite often even people who should know much better, such as PM Starmer - speak about migrants, or about media who don’t kowtow to their lies and viciousness, or about minorities, or non-human animals, or eco-protesters/Greta Thunberg, or academics/intllectuals, or political opponents, what they are often doing is viciousness-signalling. They are saying: you can trust us to scapegoat. We are powerful enough. We will legitimise hatred; if you want to be permitted to hate, then support us.
We will bully and pursue you unless you cave in to us.
We are signalling clearly, by the way we talk (and act), that we honestly are vicious and that being vicious is ‘cool’ again.
I abhor virtue-signalling. But vicious-signalling is of another order of magnitude of danger and outright evil.
Watch for it. Call it out. Explain it. Organise for something so much better than it.
