Yes, Bollywood music is not the same as before. From 2013 to 2019, songs had originality and strong storytelling. But during this period, label politics also started growing.

Around 2015–16, when great composers like @AmaalMallik , Vishal–Shekhar, Mithoon, and Salim–Sulaiman were delivering some of their best music, labels slowly began gaining more control. Remix culture started increasing, and the focus shifted toward more commercial content.

By 2017–18, things changed strongly. Remixes increased a lot, and music became more short-lived and hook-based instead of soulful and long-lasting.
From 2019 to the present, the shift became fully visible. With the rise of platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels, songs started being made for 15–30 second viral clips rather than full listening experiences. Complete albums almost disappeared.

At the same time, independent music began to boom. Artists realized they could achieve success without films. So many top composers started focusing more on independent singles and live content because great artists realied that music which is art is being diluted. So they shifted on independants.

Label politics became dominant—labels want full control. Bollywood music has now become more director/producer-driven, whereas earlier the composer had more creative power. Songs are now often made to fit marketing strategies instead of storytelling.And if you observe, from 2020 till now, there have hardly been any films where you can say, “Wow, what a music album!” in Bollywood—apart from Saiyaara and Dhurandhar. And even those—only 2 such films in 5–6 years—because the director and producer gave full creative freedom to their composers.

Labels also interfere in creative choices, like not allowing composers to pick their preferred singers. In many cases, songs recorded with one singer are later dubbed by another singer chosen by the label. This has happened with many artists—even with #ArijitSingh:COUNTRY NO1 SINGER

Because of this, many great artists have shifted toward independent music, where they have full creative freedom—and they are still delivering major hits.
