The programme brought together officials, legal practitioners, and humanitarian experts from across Africa to discuss humanitarian governance, displacement, refugee protection, international humanitarian law, disaster response, and durable solutions for affected populations.

On the sidelines of the Korea–Africa Ministerial Meeting in Seoul, I met H.E. Dr. Thambo Gina, Minister of Economic Planning and Development of Eswatini. I welcomed Eswatini’s reaffirmation of support for Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
On the margins of the Regional Event on the Global Initiative on International Humanitarian Law held in Cairo, I had the pleasure of meeting H.E. Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for International Law, Treaties and Parliamentary Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt, who also serves as my counterpart within the legal and treaties field.
Our discussions focused on the importance of strengthening political commitment to International Humanitarian Law (IHL), particularly in light of the evolving challenges posed by maritime warfare, emerging technologies, and the protection of civilians during armed conflict.
Egypt continues to play an important leadership role within the Global Initiative on IHL, including through its co-chairing of the maritime warfare workstream alongside Indonesia and the ICRC. The discussions in Cairo provided an important platform for regional engagement on the future operationalization and implementation of humanitarian law in contemporary conflicts.
For Somalia, participation in these discussions reflects our continued commitment to constructive multilateral engagement, the advancement of international law, and support for humanitarian principles and civilian protection.
Grateful for the constructive exchange and for Egypt’s leadership in advancing dialogue on contemporary humanitarian and legal challenges.

Somalia’s Safeguards Agreement and Additional Protocol were co-signed by H.E. @AbdisalamDhaay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and H.E. @rafaelmgrossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
This agreement reinforces Somalia’s commitments under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and strengthens the peaceful use of nuclear applications for socio-economic development, particularly in energy, agriculture, and healthcare including cancer prevention and treatment.
H.E. Ambassador @KhadraDuale , Somalia’s Permanent Representative, received the official copy of the signed Agreement in Geneva.

I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.
All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the @UN. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”
I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.
I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.
A defining moment for the Federal Republic of Somalia.
Somalia now serves concurrently on the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Peace and Security Council — positioning our nation at the centre of both global and continental decision-making on peace and security.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all African Union Member States for the confidence placed in Somalia’s candidacy. This endorsement reflects not only solidarity, but recognition of Somalia’s renewed credibility, steady institutional progress, and constructive diplomatic engagement.
From preventive diplomacy to conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction, Somalia will engage with clarity, balance, and strategic purpose — advancing African-led solutions, safeguarding sovereignty, and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
This dual membership is not symbolic. It is substantive. It reflects a nation that has moved from fragility to influence — and one that is prepared to act responsibly in shaping the peace and security agenda of our region and the wider international community.
