Friday Sermons Across Nigeria: INEC Chairman Must Go, Says SCSN.
Directive: Every Friday, mosques across all 36 states of Nigeria are calling on the removal of INEC Chairman Joash Amupita sermons wonโt end until the President hears us.
The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) has reiterated its call for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, saying he cannot be impartial in the upcoming general elections.
In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Nafiโu Baba Ahmad, the council said the call is not related to his religion or ethnicity. The council clarified that the statement is a further explanation of a previous one issued on January 28, which was allegedly misinterpreted.
The statement reads: "We want to clarify that our call for his removal is not based on his Christian faith or ethnicity, but rather on his past actions. Nigeria has conducted several elections since independence in 1960, and there has never been a time when religion was used to validate or invalidate election results."
The council noted that out of the 13 INEC chairmen since 1960, only two were Muslims - Prof. Attahiru Jega and Prof. Mahmood Yakubu - and yet, Nigerian Muslims have never rejected election results due to religious differences.
The statement added that the demand for Amupitan's removal is based on his actions, particularly a 2020 document he authored, which contained inflammatory language and insulted Nigerian Muslims and the North, referencing Usman Dan Fodio.
The council alleged that Amupitan's document falsely claimed Christians in Nigeria are facing "genocide" and attempted to link the security issues in northern Nigeria to Dan Fodio's 19th-century jihad, which it deemed divisive.
The council expressed disappointment that Amupitan has not distanced himself from the document and stressed that leading an electoral body requires someone who doesn't exhibit religious or ethnic bias.
