What if the ugly duckling was just that, an ugly duckling. They didn’t grow up to be beautiful but they found others who loved and accepted them anyway. #FairyTaleFlash
(I promise I’m not dissing on the original. This is just an alternate take.)
Me: *Sees people joking about their huge pile of unread books.*
Me: I don't think I really have that.
My AO3 Marked for Later: Ahem.
Me: Oh, right. Never mind.
The selkie looked around desperately for their skin. They heard a whimper. Confused, they looked behind a rock and found a shivering child wrapped up in their skin. The selkie paused. Well, perhaps, they didn't mind this particular theft. #FairyTaleFlash
The tale that the little mermaid would turn to sea foam if she failed was merely a cover story. The real price was to free the witch from her curse by taking her place as the new sea witch, continuing the curse's cycle. #FairyTaleFlash
"Drink tea made from this herb and you will never feel pain again."
"If there was a magic cure for chronic pain, we'd all be taking it. What's the catch?"
"...It will put you into an eternal slumber."
"...You know what, that's kind of tempting."

"You stole my child!"
The fairy grinned, showing pointed teeth. "Your child gave me their name willingly, practically begged me to take it. They preferred to be taken by the fae than live as your child any longer."

"You're searching for a genie to grant a wish? Pathetic. The only way to get what you want is through hard work and determination."
"There is no known cure for my sister's illness. Hard work and determination won't do jack."

I was 5 when I found it. Bundled up under the floor. The softest thing I’d ever felt, I wrapped myself in it. When she saw, mama stopped, eyes wide, then tearful. She eased the seal skin from my shoulders. Next morning, she was gone. #fairytaleflash#selkie
That moment when you were planning on writing a short epilogue for a fairytale, but now that you’ve looked into the fairytale you find yourself wanting to write a whole retelling and your idea for a short story has turned into an idea for a novel. #writing
