A NEW TUDOR DISCOVERY?
Last week I was invited to Warwick Castle to consult on a recent discovery made during conservation work.
Conservation specialists made the find while repairing a plaster ceiling in the Cedar Drawing Room.
Here’s what they found…
🧵
Honestly!
What's sport without historically-themed badinage?
(Villa could have responded by putting up an image of local boy, the Earl of Warwick, who supervised Joan's trial, at Villa Park...)

Join @AManningHistory and myself on Saturday 21st March to find out more about this fine looking fellow in Warwick’s Shire Hall. He will feature in our brand new walking tour of the hall’s portrait collection. https://t.co/QNwRPUAZw0
Baloney from start to finish sadly. From the actual story of the rebuilding, you need to check @Adam_FineArt’s PhD thesis at https://t.co/0KblNw5EiV
How Warwick Castle was 'restored on the cheap' after 1871 fire - BBC News

It’s all getting a little 18th Century in Warwickshire!!
Reminds of the Gentleman’s Party v Independent Party in the 1790s, when newly elected Independents accused the council of being ‘powerfully protected from the lofty turrets of the castle” https://t.co/lrY7sWB8ht
Anne Neville was born on June 11, 1456, at Warwick Castle. Her life was profoundly shaped by the Wars of the Roses, and she is widely considered a key example of how noblewomen were used as pawns to forge alliances, secure loyalty, and advance power in 15th century England.
Happy 569th Birthday to Anne Neville, wife of #RichardIII
Immortalised by Shakespeare as a victim with no agency. But is this credible?
It must have taken guts to refuse the veil & flee Clarence’s household. Plus Anne was in London with RIII during the critical weeks in 1483.
Earlier this year I presented lecture on how I rediscovered a missing portrait of Henry VIII via @X . You can watch it here with a suggested donation of £5 to help for its redisplay! @OisinTheDeer@Warwickshire_CC https://t.co/mmAxV99NVG
It reminded me of a funny story of the Prince wrote in his book, when Mick Jagger & Marianne Faithfull were invited to Warwick Castle one Christmas, & the shambles that followed.
I once asked Lady Brooke about this story, but she refused to talk about "the disgusting creatures"!
Enjoyed listening to @theresthistory episodes on the Rolling Stones, & the mention of their banker Prince Rupert Lowenstein, who convinced the Stones to live as tax exiles in France.
The Prince convinced Lord Brooke to sell Warwick Castle and live in France as a tax exile too.
📚THE LOST LOVE LETTERS OF GEORGE 'BEAU' BRUMMELL? 📚
Walking through Savile Row recently reminded me of a series of letters I found in the Warwick family archives during the pandemic written to Sarah lady Monson, by none other than George 'Beau' Brummell
🧵
Surprisingly, Sarah kept the letters in her papers!
From what I've read and researched, these letters have never been referenced or acknowledged by Georgian scholars. They paint a fascinating psychological window into Brummell in the worst weeks of his life.

I’m excited to say that my first book DEPRAVITY: The Story of Dangerous Art will be published next year by @FaberBooks in the UK, and @VikingBooks in the US 🖤
it tells the story of art from a darker perspective, charting the most immoral art ever produced by humanity..
I have it confirmed that 'The Rage of Party' is off for copy-editing. Revisions definitely done - it's really happening, publishing in Sept
And I managed to get it down to a measly 189,000 words. @dcsandbrook's advice - 'Don't worry if it's very long' - still heeded tho I feel.
