@Noahpinion Kudos to @Noahpinion wading into my research area. Broadly agree with his summary. There is even more literature on the positive effects of export manufacturing on working conditions. Some is summarized in a policy brief I wrote with F. Amodio (McGill): https://t.co/23zhY4e0c0
@ProudSocialist Painfull to watch. Two things next to the other BS:
- I was taught throughout my econ study about econ history, incl. enclosure. Sure, not in Macro 1, but in field courses
- Any societal change until WW2 came with huge violence. "Capitalism" societies are the most peaceful ever
@JonSteinsson its also just such a cobbled together wish-list, without a single word in the article on trade-offs, constraints, or realistic political approaches. Truely baffling.
@BrankoMilan Disappointing. He leads his country through a brutal onslaught. Why is there this wish among so many that the small just submit to the big bullies
Fascinated by how 4 year olds strenuously deny any fault on their own part even if they clearly were at fault (i.e. hurting sibling). Admitting fault seems really something kids have to be taught. Guess, some were never taught that though.
@ArtemisConsort Children impose a huge cost on you in terms of energy, money, health, sanity, and they test your relationship to the hilt. Then it is either hugely rewarding, or it leaves you miserable after all the costs you already paid. No rational being would take such a gamble.
@t_holden I am saying it. People work less hard, enjoy life more (and live longer, etc...), because they don't fear that a minor health incident is bankrupting them. Both models have their strengths and weaknesses, but I prefer the more balanced life-style here.
@JoshuaBarzon E: Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, Marseille, Genova, Rome, Napoli, Istanbul, Adriatic coast, north Sardegna, complete South of France - its not even close
@anup_malani@GalorOded Maybe not a trap, but rather that prosperity comes in cycles? Good times make people specialize in technologies that eventually fade? After a downturn, these communities may look for new opportunities. Ie. Berlin, poor due to loss of industry after ww2 now excels in tech&culture.
This coffee shop in Kyiv opened yesterday, then got hit by a russian air strike just hours later.
Today, they're still open and people in Kyiv are lining up to buy a coffee to support them, stepping over debris and broken glass on the way in.
FYI, the coffee is excellent 🇺🇦
The moment of one of today’s Russian strikes on Kyiv.
I can see that fewer and fewer people are reading news from Ukraine. I understand that on a Sunday morning, people don’t want to read about war. They want to sleep a little longer, drink good coffee, and sit in the sun. I understand that. The algorithms on X limit content about war, destruction, and suffering. You have to make an effort to even see this information.
All of this is understandable on a human level. But unfortunately, if you remove Putin and the war from your information feed, they do not disappear from reality.
Putin is a sadist and a maniac. He is a threat to all of humanity.
There needs to be active resistance. News from Ukraine needs to be shared. People need to keep their focus.
Despite a sleepless night, I’m still here. And I’m grateful to everyone who continues to stand with us.
One day, we’ll drink morning coffee together in a beautiful, peaceful Kyiv.
@HannoLustig What is bizarre is the narrative that Europe is becoming the third world. It tops the US in the majority of life quality parameters. My sense is that the main reasons Europeans work fewer hours is that they are not worried that a basic health emergency will bankrupt them.
Trump on Taiwan: When you look at the odds, China is very, very powerful, big country. That's a very small island. Think of it, it's 59 miles away. We're 9500 miles away. That's a little bit of a difficult problem. Taiwan was developed because we had presidents that didn't know what the hell they were doing. They stole our chip industry.
There has been a big debate over whether Europeans are really poorer than Americans, and whether Europe is really falling behind.
Unfortunately, the pro-Europe side is wrong.

@lugaricano I agree that houses are not as massive as in US, but I thought this is due to scarcer land. Meanwhile my two kids were born in excellent hospitals for precise out-of-pocket costs of 0.
@lugaricano I am very surprised by this discourse. Most of my peers, born 1984-85 in Germany and went to university, now live pretty comfortable lives with nice houses/flats, cars, holidays, most with kids. Also in Northern Italy, where I live now, this holds largely true.
