Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health, such as frostbite and hypothermia. Protect yourself by:
· Knowing the weather forecast and preparing your activity accordingly
· Dressing appropriately when going outside (wear several layers of loose-fitting clothes, hats, scarves, mittens, etc.) and cover up all exposed skin. In extreme cold, frostbite can occur within minutes

Heavy rain, strong winds and warm temperatures are in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday.

Rainfall amounts of 25+ mm are expected with wind gusts of 60-70 km/h, except higher near the coast. Freezing rain is expected in the northwest.

Be prepared for potential power outages, water pooling on roads could cause hazardous driving conditions, and localized flooding could occur due to melting snow and rainfall.

During an Extreme Heat Alert (Level 3) everyone is at high risk for heat related illnesses and heat stroke.

• People living alone without air conditioning are at extreme risk.
• Check regularly on your neighbours and relatives to make sure they are not in danger.

With temperatures on the rise, you can take the following actions to prevent heat illness:

🚰 Drink plenty of cool fluids, especially water, before feeling thirsty.
👕 Wear lightweight, loose-fitting and light-coloured clothing.
🏡 Frequently visit a vulnerable family member or neighbour to make sure they are coping well.
☀ Keep the sun out with curtains or blinds.
⚽ Plan outdoor activities around cooler times of the day.
☀ Avoid exposure to the sun.
🐈 Never leave someone or a pet in your care inside a parked car.
🏊‍♀️ Spend a few hours in a cool place or in an air-conditioned location (mall, library, church, shaded park or at a pool).
🍽 Avoid using the stove for cooking a meal.
🚿 Take cool showers or baths until refreshed.
❄ Use your air conditioner if you have one.
🛏 Make arrangements to spend time or sleep in a cooler place.

Did you know that measles is highly contagious, and cases are on the rise worldwide?

Being fully vaccinated is almost 100% effective in preventing the disease. Make sure to protect yourself against life-threatening diseases now and into the future.

If you were born after 1970, you need two doses of measles vaccine. If you haven’t received them or aren’t sure that you are fully vaccinated, talk to a health-care provider.

Canada’s Public Health Week runs from April 8-12 this year.

This week is an opportunity to pause and reflect on the importance of public health – the healthy, preventative actions that we can all do like getting vaccinated and regular handwashing to better protect ourselves and others from disease.

If you have personal risk factors for severe illnesses you will be eligible for a spring COVID-19 vaccine beginning April 2. Public Health recommends that those who are eligible to receive this vaccine wait at least six months after their last vaccine or COVID-19 infection, whichever is more recent.

Those eligible include:

• Individuals aged 65 and older;
• Individuals who live in a long-term care facility, including nursing homes, or adult residential facilities;
• Individuals who are immunocompromised aged 6 months and older.
