How I Got Over is the AND Campaign’s new docuseries about the role a devout faith in the authority of Scripture played in the history of the Black Church. Premieres February 13th. #BHM
My job as a Christian is not to continuously let you know how bad I think one side or the other is. There's a standard that does not change with the wind

A country with the right priorities is making sure its children are doing well. How we're doing as a country has to reflect how we're doing by the poor and the fatherless — otherwise we completely miss the most vulnerable people in our society

Sadly, many Christians have made politics an idol — with the belief that if my person gets in, everything can be fixed. There's a whole lot of problems that politics and policy are just not fit to fix

Christians captured by partisanship, worldly ideology, and identity idolatry will give you 101 reasons why despising Christians on the other side is acceptable (ie they’re so evil).
All 101 of those reason are lies.
“As I have loved you, so you MUST love one another.” -Jesus
We can’t allow the circumstances to dictate who we are. We must make sure it's our values and our beliefs that dictate who we are. That's one of the greatest attributes a Christians can have.

Going about it in a more Christlike way — even if it wasn't effective — would be right. But it is still more effective than the other way, which is short-sighted and will always fall apart or turn us into monsters.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine speaks up for the valuable contributions of Haitian immigrants in his state. 👏🏿
The recent attacks on these people have been disgusting.
Credibility is currency in our democracy because people need to have a certain level of trust in you to be persuaded by you. We tell the truth even at the expense of our own narratives.

"There's a cross that neither political conservatism nor progressivism is fit to bear. There's a civic moment in need of faithful witnesses who love social justice and won't surrender the truth to be loved by the world."

My latest piece: "Performative outrage has seeped into the church’s discourse about politics and race."
"Drama can bring us closer to a truth or amuse us away from it. Today, Christians must choose sober discernment and joy over dramatics."
We don't always change minds immediately — and sometimes all we can do is plant a seed. That requires patience with people who aren't where we think they should be. But certainty was never a reason to stop extending grace.

Winning the culture war can't be at the center of our public witness, and spiting our opposition can't be at the center of our public witness. It must be centered on Christ.

Sometimes we’re too quick to say “that’s offensive” before asking “is it true?”
We should reject unfair critiques, but if we pretend every critique is unfair we’ll never grow.
“Be slow to take offense.” -James 1:19-20
The question isn’t whether a Christian should pledge full allegiance to ideological conservatism or progressivism.
The question is: Does this specific issue call for a more conservative or progressive approach?
Some issues call for something altogether more profound than both.
Our algorithms are constantly feeding our fear & resentment. Our political and racial narratives demand cynicism.
We’ve begun to crave worst case scenario content.
Anyone who inserts hope or nuance into the moment is not to be trusted.
In the Digital Age, if we want to find a religious leader who’ll tell us our sin isn’t sin, we will find them.
There have always been teachers who’re willing to “tickle” our ears. They’re just more accessible now.
Faith is surrendering to God’s truth not making it serve us
The goal of Christian social engagement isn’t to avoid everything “woke” progressives or white evangelicals do or believe.
It’s to glorify Christ by loving our neighbor and obeying Scripture. Love (&) Truth
Lift up Christ and you’ll avoid the errors on all sides
Politics can have a significant impact on human flourishing. Christians should engage politics to ensure their neighbors aren’t denied justice.
That said, Christian leaders shouldn’t overstate the role of politics. Many solutions are best achieved by families and communities.
All the games being played with voter’s rights and gerrymandering right now are repugnant and undemocratic.
The main people talking about patriotism and civil rights will throw all that out the window to give their party an electoral advantage.
