Yet another Threatened species is doing well on the Gunbower Forest Ramsar floodplain.

The floodplain rustyhood is in the orchid family and is found in only a handful of places in Australia.

In 2020 we recorded 22 plants. Last year there were 81. This year there are 89.

For those of you into the dark arts of sun orchid taxonomy, enjoy the inner workings of the appropriately named Mauve-tufted Sun-orchid (Thelymitra malvina) flower. Love that translucent blue column as well... Just one of the orchids seen today near the bay in the 2nd picture.

Time for the donkey orchids to glitter. This is the Leopard Orchid (Diuris pardina) in remnant bush 22 km east of the Melbourne CBD.
