Today marks 25 years since the formation of the ANSWER Coalition (@answercoalition). In the years since its founding, organizers have dedicated two decades to the fight against racism, militarism and war.

Right now, Trump desperately seeks to reassert unipolar dominance in a new era of geopolitics. The U.S. is no longer the world hegemon but that has not softened the brutality and rugged imperialism of the far-right’s agenda.

Because the ANSWER Coalition prioritized campaigns against racism and linked them to the larger war drive the Coalition built a bridge between the US antiwar movement and the besieged communities that continues to this day.

ANSWER has played a major role in integrating these communities into the larger antiwar movement rather than allowing them to stand alone in the face of a racist assault against their basic democratic rights.

THE ANSWER COALITION: 25 YEARS OF ORGANIZING AGAINST WAR AND RACISM

On September 14, 2001, just three days after the September 11 attacks that killed over 3,000 civilians, a group of organizers formed the ANSWER Coalition, which dedicated itself to relaunching an antiwar movement in the United States.

25 years later, the ANSWER Coalition is committed to continuing to fight against U.S. empire and militarization, at home and abroad!

In response to the September 11 attacks, the Bush Administration launched an all out campaign inside the US against Arab-Americans, Iranian-Americans, South Asian communities, and Muslim-Americans. Thousands of people were detained not for what they had done but because of who they were. Arab communities were viciously demonized and targeted.

The FBI sent agents into mosques around the country. People were recruited as spies against their own communities rather than be sent to prison on trumped up charges. Twenty five years later it is hard for people who were not there or who were too young or maybe not yet born to understand the gravity of the anti-Arab hysteria that was generated inside the US by the “War on Terror.”

August 15 marks Korea’s freedom from Japanese colonialism. Today, however, Korea continues to live under the boot of another occupying force — the United States military.

Dozens of US-based anti-war and peace activists joined @nodutdol for the first international US Out of Korea brigade to bridge our fights against imperialism and war. Money for people’s needs, not the US war machine!

🚨NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION ON SATURDAY, JULY 18: The entire country must rise up to stop ICE’s killing spree. On July 7, ICE agents murdered Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. Today ICE murdered Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine.

These deaths are not accidental — they are the direct result of the Trump administration’s war on working-class immigrant communities, a war which is now demanding agents arrest 2,000 people per day.

After the people of Minnesota organized strikes and shutdowns to drive out Operation Metro Surge, ICE tried for several months to “stay out of the headlines.” But ICE’s overall aggressive and violent approach has continued with new tactics, and now a massive budget. Every Congressperson who has voted for ICE funding is responsible for these crimes. ICE may have pulled the trigger but they handed them the guns.

Two devastating earthquakes hit Venezuela on June 24. As of today, June 29, the death toll stands at 1,450+, and over 3,000 people have been injured. Tens of thousands are reported missing.

While the Venezuelan people and its institutions have been working around the clock to respond to the catastrophe, their capacity to respond has been undercut by a decade of over 1,000 U.S. sanctions, which remain in place even today. Donald Trump has publicly bragged that after the so-called “one-day war” against Venezuela on Jan. 3, the U.S. has been able to extract millions of barrels of oil to “repay” what the U.S. spent in its massive military deployment against Venezuela.

We firmly reject Washington’s war on Venezuela, whether through sanctions or airstrikes, the Venezuelan people must have sovereignty over their resources, land, and political decisions. As the country struggles to recover from this disaster, we stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and demand that they be free from U.S. control and meddling.
